Whisper to Me
By: Nick Lake
Release Date: May 3, 2016
Source: Bloomsbury Publishing
Goodreads Summary: Cassie is writing a letter to the boy whose heart she broke. She’s trying to explain why. Why she pushed him away. Why her father got so angry when he saw them together. Why she disappears some nights. Why she won’t let herself remember what happened that long-ago night on the boardwalk. Why she fell apart so completely.
Desperate for his forgiveness, she’s telling the whole story of the summer she nearly lost herself. She’s hoping he’ll understand as well as she now does how love—love for your family, love for that person who makes your heart beat faster, and love for yourself—can save you after all.
Review: This book was sent to me by Bloomsbury Publishing in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much Bloomsbury!
High School Junior Cass lives in a small Jersey shore town with her ex-marine father. As she walks down to the beach one day, she comes across a shoe with a human foot still inside. Click. Cass’s life is forever changed as she begins to hear a voice in her head, forcing her to face her past, present, and future. Whisper to Me is her last attempt at forgiveness from the one person who quieted the voice.
Judging this book by its cover, I was planning on diving into a sweet, contemporary story. Little did I know that it would be scary, sad, suspenseful, and sweet! I loved Whisper to Me because it was a fast-paced but emotional read that was just the right mix of heavy and light.
Nick Lake’s writing is impeccable. This was the first novel I have read by him, and now I think I should read many more! The way this story is told in retrospect makes it even better. It is like thinking back on important moments of your life and being able to notice so much more.
The first third of this book literally scared me. Once Cassie began to hear the voice, I was almost scared to go to sleep at night. Later, I realized what was going on as the story developed and the way it was written was great.
Cass’s past and present is so raw and emotional. From dealing with death on so many levels and also real life, she really comes of age in this story and finds herself. Her situation is one that I’m sure so many people can relate to in one way or another. From dealing with loss, to abuse, to self hate, to friendship, to self worth, and to love – what a journey!
The love story really sits at the center of this novel as it is the main reason for Cass writing the letter. It is so sweet and innocent, but with a compelling twist and backstory. This was unlike anything I’ve ever read!
I believe that Whisper to Me is a novel that all teens and young adults should read! I really loved the emotion and the suspense and the overall journey.
